Castle Rock sits about 28 miles south of downtown Denver and about 37 miles north of Colorado Springs, at the junction of Interstate 25 and State Highway 86, according to Wikipedia’s Castle Rock entry. By mile markers on I-25, the Plum Creek Parkway exit (181) to the Colfax exit (210A) is roughly 29 to 30 miles. The minutes depend on the hour you drive, so I will not promise one number.
If you are weighing Castle Rock against other south metro towns, my Living in Castle Rock guide covers the housing side. And if you would like homes sorted by the drive you actually want, my free buyer guide is a good first step.
The Miles, in Plain Numbers
Wikipedia puts Castle Rock 28 miles south of downtown Denver, and describes the Denver Tech Center as an 18-mile drive north. The same page says about 80% of Castle Rock residents commute out of town for work, with a mean travel time to work of 28.6 minutes. That is an average across everyone, including people who work in town, so it is not a promise for any one address.
Colorado Springs is the other direction: about 37 miles south. Using I-25 exit numbers from the I-25 exit list, the gap between Castle Rock (exit 181) and the Tejon Street area (exit 140) works out to about 41 miles by mile marker. That is my arithmetic from the list, not a posted distance.
Which Castle Rock Exit You Use Matters

Castle Rock has several I-25 exits, and the one nearest your house changes the trip more than most people expect. The exit list shows Plum Creek Parkway at 181, Wilcox Street and Wolfensberger Road at 182, US 85 and Founders Parkway at 184, and Castle Rock Parkway at 185. State Highway 86 ends at the I-25 junction at exit 184 as Founders Parkway.
North of town, Happy Canyon Road is exit 187, RidgeGate Parkway in Lone Tree is exit 192, and E-470 meets I-25 at exit 194. The Denver Tech Center sits between Dry Creek Road (196) and Belleview Avenue (199). When I help someone compare homes, I map the nearest on-ramp to the workplace exit before anything else. I also wrote about one specific ramp in my Crystal Valley exit 179 post, and compared several towns in my south Denver commute times guide.
The I-25 Gap and Express Lane South of Town
South of Castle Rock, CDOT finished the 18-mile I-25 South Gap project, from south of Castle Rock to Monument, in November 2022. Per CDOT’s project page, it added an Express Lane in each direction. Drivers can pay a toll for a more reliable trip or use the two free general-purpose lanes, and carpools of three or more ride free. That page was written while tolling was being tested, so check current toll rules before you plan around it.
For a Denver-bound commute, most of the trip stays on the general-purpose lanes, so the Gap matters mainly if your day includes Colorado Springs or Monument.
Transit: What Castle Rock Does Not Have
Wikipedia states that Castle Rock voters opted the town out of the Regional Transportation District in November 2005, so there is no RTD bus or light rail from Castle Rock to Denver. I could not confirm Bustang stops for this post, so look at the Bustang site for the South Line before you count on it. For most buyers I talk to, this means the car is the plan.
The practical test I suggest: drive your real route at your real hour, on a Tuesday morning and again on a Friday afternoon, before you make an offer. Twenty minutes of testing beats any article, including this one.
Quick answers
How far is Castle Rock from Denver? About 28 miles south of downtown Denver, according to Wikipedia, with the Denver Tech Center about 18 miles north of town.
How far is Castle Rock from Colorado Springs? About 37 miles. By I-25 mile markers it is roughly 41 miles to the Tejon Street exit.
Is there light rail or an RTD bus from Castle Rock? No. The town opted out of RTD in 2005, so driving is the main way to reach Denver.
If you would like me to map a few Castle Rock homes against your actual workplace exit, I’m always happy to do that. No pressure. Sources: Wikipedia, Castle Rock; Wikipedia, Interstate 25 in Colorado; CDOT, I-25 South Gap.
