Things to do in Highlands Ranch, CO come down to three anchors: four recreation centers run by the Highlands Ranch Community Association (HRCA), the 8,200-acre Backcountry Wilderness Area, and the historic Highlands Ranch Mansion. Everything below comes from the organizations’ own websites, and I flag where details differ so you can confirm before you plan a visit.

If you’re still learning the area, start with my Living in Highlands Ranch guide. And if you’re comparing homes by how close they sit to these amenities, my free buyer guide shows how I build that kind of shortlist.

The Four Recreation Centers

HRCA lists four recreation centers: Northridge, Southridge, Eastridge and Westridge. Its overview page says they total over 329,000 square feet, and each has indoor, outdoor and lap pools. Other amenities named on that page include an aqua climbing wall at Northridge, a 30-foot traditional climbing wall at Eastridge, golf simulators at Northridge and Southridge, batting cages at Westridge, and racquetball, pickleball, tennis, basketball and volleyball courts across the centers.

HRCA’s site also lists seasonal events. As of mid-October it shows Oaked and Smoked, a whiskey and barbecue tasting, on October 24, 2026, and Hometown Holiday, a tree lighting, on December 12, 2026. Dates move, so check the calendar before you go. Membership is open to homeowners and renters, but I’d confirm current card and day-pass pricing with HRCA directly.

The Backcountry Wilderness Area is described by HRCA as an 8,200-acre conservation property. Its pages cite more than 25 miles of natural-surface trails for hiking, mountain biking and trail running. HRCA lists elk, wild turkeys, coyotes, bluebirds and golden eagles among the wildlife.

Here is the detail worth checking. The Backcountry page says that beyond the gates of Base Camp, exploration is available only through guided programs. The home page talks about members exploring the trails, so the two don’t line up perfectly. Before you plan a hike, call or check the Backcountry Outdoor Center for what is open to you on a given day. The page also lists archery ranges and horse programs at the Outdoor Center.

Highlands Ranch Mansion and Historic Park

The Highlands Ranch Mansion sits at 9950 E Gateway Drive. According to Wikipedia’s Highlands Ranch entry, it was built between 1891 and 1904, and John W. Springer bought the ranch in 1898. A renovation ran from 2010 to 2012.

The Mansion’s own site says it is open to the public for tours, community events and educational programs, and that it is rentable for weddings and corporate events. It sits within a historic park of about 50 acres, with roughly 1.4 miles of soft-surface trail, historic barns, corrals and a windmill. The site describes a future 250-acre park. Tour hours live on a separate page, so verify them first.

Who Runs What, and Why Buyers Should Ask

Two organizations are easy to confuse here. HRCA runs the recreation centers and the Backcountry. The Highlands Ranch Metro District, which Wikipedia says runs most municipal services including parks and open space, owns the Mansion property. That split is the reason Highlands Ranch has layered fees. I broke that down in Highlands Ranch doesn’t have one HOA, it has three fee layers.

Highlands Ranch is also an unincorporated community in Douglas County, so a Highlands Ranch address isn’t a city address. My Highlands Ranch zip code guide explains what 80126, 80129 and 80130 cover. When you tour a home, ask which fees apply to that specific address and what they pay for.
