Things to do in Castle Rock, CO start with the rock itself: a castle-shaped butte just north of the town center, topped by a 45-foot electric star. Add a historic downtown, a large park on the town’s south side, and a fall calendar that runs from late October into holiday carriage rides. Everything below comes from the Town of Castle Rock, the downtown association and Wikipedia, and I note where to double-check dates.
If you’re still getting to know the area, start with my Living in Castle Rock guide. And if you’re comparing homes by how close they sit to downtown or the parks, my free buyer guide shows how I build that kind of shortlist.
The Butte and the Star
Wikipedia says Castle Rock is named for the prominent, castle-shaped butte near the center of town. It describes a 45-foot electric star on the butte, lit every Saturday before Thanksgiving since 1936, with a downtown lighting event that night. The star then stays lit until the end of the National Western Stock Show in January.
Castle Rock sits at the junction of I-25 and State Highway 86, about 28 miles south of downtown Denver and 37 miles north of Colorado Springs. Wikipedia puts the elevation at 6,224 feet.

Per Wikipedia, Castle Rock has 5,415 acres of open space, about 27 percent of town land, and nearly 75 miles of soft-surface and paved trails. The largest park project is Philip S. Miller Park, which opened its first phase on October 25, 2014 and is listed at 300 acres. It’s the home of the Miller Activity Complex, and the town’s Parks and Recreation page also lists a recreation center, Rock Park, pickleball and a Summer Concert Series.
One thing I noticed: the town’s site shows a new Castle Rock Sports Center under construction at 401 Prairie Hawk Drive. If recreation is on your list, ask the town what is open now and what is coming, and check hours before you go.
Downtown, the Museum and Fall Events
Downtown has roughly 160 businesses, according to the Downtown Merchants Association. The Castle Rock Historical Museum is in the former Denver and Rio Grande depot at 420 Elbert Street, built of local rhyolite. Wikipedia counts seven National Register buildings in town, including the depot and the original courthouse.
The town calendar for October 2026 lists a Fall Festival at Festival Park on October 18, a Boo Bash at the Outlets at Castle Rock on October 24, and the Fangtastic Festival at Festival Park on October 30. The museum also runs “Ghostly Stories and Tragic Tales of Castle Rock” on several dates, including October 31. Later, Holiday Carriage Rides run Wednesday through Sunday from November 22 through January 3 at Festival Park. The downtown site lists $59 per carriage with tickets required in advance, and online sales opening November 18 at noon. Dates move, so confirm before you plan.
What This Means If You’re Shopping for a Home Here
Castle Rock addresses can look similar on a map and still sit in different zip codes. My Castle Rock zip code guide explains what 80104, 80108 and 80109 cover. Wikipedia also notes there’s no RTD bus or light rail service, so most trips here are by car, which matters for commute planning. And because long-term water supply is a real topic for the town, I wrote about it in Castle Rock’s water future. When you tour a home, ask how far it is from the places you’d actually use.
