Things to do in Parker, Colorado come down to four anchors: the historic Mainstreet area, the Parker Arts, Culture & Events Center (PACE Center) at 20000 Pikes Peak Ave., the Cherry Creek Trail along Cherry Creek, and the open space and trails the Town of Parker maintains. Nearby Rueter-Hess Reservoir adds a fifth option, though it sits outside town limits. Here’s what each one actually offers, from someone who spends a lot of time in Parker.

If you’re just starting to learn the town, my Living in Parker guide is the best place to begin. And if you’re ready to see how these spots line up with real addresses, you can browse homes on my property search page.

Mainstreet: Parker’s Historic Core

Parker’s roots go back to 1864, when the Pine Grove Way Station served travelers, and the settlement was renamed Parker in 1882, according to Wikipedia. Much of that history is still walkable on Mainstreet. The restored Twenty Mile post office sits on Mainstreet just west of Parker Road, Parker Consolidated School is part of the Mainstreet Center, and the Hood House is in Preservation Park.

Parker Arts also runs two venues here: The Schoolhouse and Ruth Memorial Chapel, both at 19650 Mainstreet. It’s a good first stop if you like to see a place’s history before you look at its houses.

The PACE Center is the Town’s cultural hub, with theater, concerts, gallery exhibits, classes and camps. It’s also the home of the Parker Symphony Orchestra, established in 1994, and “Nutcracker of Parker” has run there each December since 2003.

The box office is open Monday through Friday from noon to 5 p.m., plus 90 minutes before performances. In summer, Discovery Park at 20115 Mainstreet hosts free concerts. Check the Parker Arts calendar for current dates, because schedules change every season.

Trails, Parks and Open Space

Cherry Creek flows through Parker toward Denver, and the Cherry Creek Trail follows it. The creek itself is 48 miles long, and the trail connects Parker to Cherry Creek State Park and downtown Denver, as described on Wikipedia’s Cherry Creek page.

The Town maintains 10 trails: more than 27 miles of paved multi-use trails, more than 6 miles of natural-surface equestrian trails, and a 1.8-mile natural-surface multi-use loop. It also looks after about 250 acres of developed parkland and more than 900 acres of open space. For indoor options, the Parker Recreation Center is on Lincoln Ave. and the Parker Field House is about 100,000 square feet.

Rueter-Hess Reservoir, Just Outside Town

Rueter-Hess Reservoir sits southwest of Parker, in Newlin Gulch, and is owned by the Parker Water and Sanitation District rather than the Town. Trails there first opened in November 2020. As of a 2023 notice from the Rueter-Hess Recreation Authority, the reservoir was open for catch-and-release fishing and non-motorized boating.

Rules, hours and fees can change, so check with the Recreation Authority before you go. One more local detail: many homes with a Parker address are actually in unincorporated Douglas County, which affects which trails and services are Town-maintained. I explained how to check in Your Address Says Parker. Your Home Might Not Actually Be in Parker. and in my guide to Parker new construction neighborhoods.
